Technology

Drs. Smith, Feder, and Salar and our dental team know that dentistry is ever-evolving, and we participate in continuing education and training to stay current with changes that are taking place. While no technology can replace the human interactions we value so much, it does play a large part in making your dental treatment more comfortable and efficient.

Please take a few moments to browse through some of the state-of-the-art technology currently available at our Belleville dental office. Then call us to schedule a visit so we can show you the difference technology can make at your next appointment

Digital X-Rays

Our dentists would not be doing their job if they did not take periodic x-rays of your teeth at our Belleville dental office. We cannot treat what we can’t see, and dental x-rays allow us to accurately diagnose conditions like decay, gum disease, and infections long before they do long-term damage to your oral health.

At the office of Michael Smith, DMD, we use only digital x-rays that protect our patients by emitting about 80 percent less radiation than film x-rays. Our dentists use them for diagnosing and treating conditions, but they’re also an invaluable educational tool. Because digital x-rays produce such crisp, highly-detailed images, we can show them to you on your chairside monitor, and you can see what we see.

We use state-of-the-art digital sensors to take your x-rays that make the process more comfortable than you might remember in the past. We also use panoramic x-rays when we need to see all of your teeth in a single image.

Electric Handpieces

Our goal is to ensure that your experiences with us are pleasant and stress-free. There are several ways we do this, and one that our patients really appreciate is the use of electric handpieces.

Instead of air-driven handpieces that produce a high-pitched sound and uncomfortable vibrations, Dr. Smith has invested in electric handpieces. Since they’re not air-driven, they are quieter, and electric handpieces are much more powerful because they’re driven by a motor.

Our dentists and hygienists remove decay and plaque more efficiently, streamlining your appointments, and getting you out of the dental chair faster. Electric handpieces also provide a level of precision that is not possible to achieve with air-driven tools.

Rotary Endodontics

Do you dread the thought of root canals? It’s a myth that they’re painful, and with modern techniques and technology, we make root canals at our Belleville dental office more comfortable than you ever imagined they could be.

The secret is rotary endodontics, a type of technology that eliminates the need for traditional hand tools dentists used in the past. Instead of manual steel files, rotary endodontics allows us to efficiently and comfortably clear away root infections. Rotary endodontics can also provide more positive long-term outcomes because the flexible tip helps ensure that we remove all traces of the infection from your tooth.

Patients who have had root canals with rotary endodontics say that it was the most comfortable, efficient procedure they’ve ever had.

Panoramic X-Rays

Routine dental x-rays are essential to help us see what’s happening inside your teeth. Sometimes, however, our dentists need to see your entire mouth in a single image and would recommend a panoramic dental x-ray.

A digital panoramic x-ray shows us your jaws, all your upper and lower teeth, and surrounding structures. These images allow our dentists to determine the position of your teeth and roots, gauge bone levels in your jaw, analyze your jaw joints, and look for cysts or tumors.

Another benefit of panoramic x-rays is that they are taken extra-orally (outside the mouth), making them perfect for adults and children who can’t stand having intraoral (inside the mouth) x-rays taken.

Nitrous Oxide

Patients at the office of Michael Smith, DMD know that we provide gentle, supportive care to help them overcome any nervousness. However, if you struggle with dental anxiety, we also offer calming nitrous oxide to help you relax.

Nitrous oxide is a safe gas that you inhale through a small mask on your nose. In just a few minutes, you will feel a wave of relaxation that makes it possible for us to provide the care you need in a safe, comfortable manner.

You will not go to sleep and can easily communicate with your dentist and dental assistant. An experienced team member monitors you throughout the procedure to ensure your comfort and safety. At the end of the appointment, we’ll turn off the flow of nitrous and switch to pure oxygen. In a few minutes, you will feel alert and refreshed without any drowsy after-effects.

Nitrous oxide is perfect for those with anxiety or anyone who wants a more relaxed experience at the dental office.

Intraoral Camera

Have you ever sat in the chair during a dental exam feeling a little frustrated because you couldn't see what your dentist was looking at?

Today we use intraoral cameras that produce images we can share with you on your chairside monitor. An intraoral camera is a small handheld instrument that illuminates the inside of your mouth and captures images that appear instantly on your chairside monitor. You can follow along with your dentist and see in great detail everything they see during a visual examination.

With intraoral cameras, we can point out problems and explain what treatment you may need and how it will benefit your long-term oral health. We also add the images to your patient history so we can refer to them and send them to your insurance company or specialists as needed.

TVs in Treatment Rooms

Everyone can benefit from some pleasant distraction during a dental visit, which is why we have ceiling-mounted TVs in each of our treatment rooms. Adults and children both enjoy that they can take their mind off the activity around them and watch their favorite TV show.
