Tooth Extraction
Each of your teeth plays an essential role in the overall function, comfort, and appearance of your smile. If you experience a problem with one of them, we will do everything possible to keep it healthy and intact for as long as possible.
But sometimes a tooth becomes unrepairable due to extensive decay, trauma, or infection, and the only option left is for us to remove it. At the office of Michael Smith, DMD, our experienced dentists provide comfortable tooth extractions for patients in Belleville and surrounding communities.
Reasons for Tooth Extraction
Tooth extraction for any reason can seem daunting, but in the hands of a gentle, caring dental team, it is typically a straightforward procedure. We may recommend tooth extraction for any of the following reasons:
- A cavity is too advanced to be repaired with a tooth crown
- A tooth infection or abscess is too advanced to fix with a root canal
- A tooth has broken off at or below the gum line
- Advanced gum disease, called periodontitis, has loosened a tooth
- Some teeth need to be removed to plan for denture or implant placement
The only way we can determine if extraction is necessary is by taking intraoral photos and digital x-rays of the tooth. If Dr. Smith, Dr. Fazili, or Dr. Ridenhour find that we need to remove the tooth, they will use these images to show you the problem and why they recommend an extraction.
We can tell you as much or as little as you want to know, but it is crucial to us that you feel informed before we move forward with extraction.

I had a root canal and it was painless
Great experience. Even for those with dental phobias. I had a root canal and it was painless. Dr. Smith is fast and efficient, not allowing time for fear of pain to set in. Yet he was attentive enough to ensure I liked the look before leaving. It was a pleasant dental experience. Marie, Nikki K, and Beth made me felt comfortable as well.

Nitrous Oxide
Patients at the office of Michael Smith, DMD know that we provide gentle, supportive care to help them overcome any nervousness. However, if you struggle with dental anxiety, we also offer calming nitrous oxide to help you relax.
Nitrous oxide is a safe gas that you inhale through a small mask on your nose. In just a few minutes, you will feel a wave of relaxation that makes it possible for us to provide the care you need in a safe, comfortable manner.
You will not go to sleep and can easily communicate with your dentist and dental assistant. An experienced team member monitors you throughout the procedure to ensure your comfort and safety. At the end of the appointment, we’ll turn off the flow of nitrous and switch to pure oxygen. In a few minutes, you will feel alert and refreshed without any drowsy after-effects.
Nitrous oxide is perfect for those with anxiety or anyone who wants a more relaxed experience at the dental office.
