Why Might I Need A Root Canal?
Root canal therapy is necessary when a dental infection is present. This means that bacteria has entered the tooth and has caused the interior material to become inflamed. When this happens, a root canal procedure is needed to remove the infected dentin and connecting roots, restore your oral health, and eliminate your pain.
Signs You May Need A Root Canal
To be honest, it is typically fairly obvious when a root canal is needed because there is plenty of discomfort. However, an early dental infection may not be able to be diagnosed at home. Please contact our team if you suspect that you have any dental problem at all — or better yet, maintain regular cleaning and exam appointments! If you are experiencing any of the symptoms below, please contact our office as you may need a root canal. We can help you eliminate the symptoms and restore your oral health.
- pain when chewing
- a pimple-like bump on the gum near the infected tooth
- swollen gum tissue surrounding the infected tooth
- lingering sensitivity to hot or cold
The Root Canal Procedure
The actual root canal procedure is actually fairly simple. With modern tools and techniques, this procedure is very routine and safe. Let’s walk you through what happens during a root canal:
First, we clean the tooth and prepare your mouth. Then, we carefully access the tooth using special tools and remove the infected material. We typically remove the dentin and the connecting nerves. By doing this, we are eliminating your tooth’s ability to feel pain.
After the infection is eradicated and the new cavity is cleaned, we will then fill it with a substance called gutta-percha. It’s a putty like substance that will help give your tooth strength and will help keep out new infections. We then simply cap the entire tooth with a crown to restore its structural integrity. Then we are done! Your tooth is how disease- and pain-free!
Commonly Asked Questions About Root Canals
There are a few common questions we get regarding root canals. Let’s answer them quickly here for you. If you have any additional concerns, please remember that you are welcome to contact our team.
Does it hurt? No! Root canal procedures are designed to be painless. We use Vibraject, a pain-free applicator, to administer a local anesthetic before the procedure. The anesthetic is designed to numb the area and keep you from feeling any discomfort during treatment. Thanks to this technology, you will remain 100 percent comfortable. Root canal therapy is designed to eliminate pain, not cause it!
Is it permanent? Yes! Because we have removed the susceptible material inside your tooth and sealed it, your tooth should remain strong and healthy after the root canal procedure. While complications do exist, you should not feel the need to worry if you are taking proper care of your smile. Regardless, your tooth can no longer feel pain so that tooth will not cause you discomfort ever again.
Is it safe? Of course! Under the care of our talented dental team, root canal procedures are entirely safe. If you have any technical questions about the procedure, please direct them to our staff.
