At the office of Thomas J. Feder, DDS, PC, in Belleville, IL, we love hearing about our patients goals for the coming year. Many of them want to improve their health by exercising more or eating more greens. Other patients are looking to cut expenses such they can save up for that new car or dream vacation. But what if you made a new year’s resolution that could benefit your health AND save you money?

Sound too good to be true? It’s not. In today’s post of our dental health blog, we’re going to look at how dental cleanings and exams can benefit your health and save you money. We’ll look at how dental exams and dental cleanings lower your risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and other illnesses. Then we’ll look at what you can expect during a routine dental cleaning and dental exam.

The Importance of Dental Cleanings and Dental Exams

The American Dental Association recommend that every patient have their teeth cleaned and examined at least once every six months. A dental cleaning help stop the advance of tooth decay and gum disease, while a dental exam can detect early signs of tooth decay. Regular brushing and flossing alone are generally not enough to prevent tooth decay and gum disease.

Both tooth decay and gum disease are caused by the accumulation of plaque on your gums and teeth. Plaque is an acidic film of bacteria which can erode holes into the enamel of your teeth, and irritate your gums. Plaque gathers on your teeth every time you eat and drink; plaque has a tendency to accumulate in places you can’t reach with regular brushing and flossing.

When plaque rests on your teeth, it causes decay, cavities and infections. When it gathers on and beneath your gums, it causes gum disease. Gum disease can actually cause your teeth to begin separating from your gums, increasing the likelihood that you’ll lose your teeth. Gum disease has been linked to to other illnesses including diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.

During dental cleanings, we focus on removing plaque and dental tartar (hardened plaque) from your teeth and gums. Regular dental cleanings and good oral home care are generally all you need to reverse the early stages of gum disease. Dental exams detect early signs of tooth decay, allowing us to treat it before it becomes a major problem.

How Dental Cleanings and Dental Exams Can Save You Money

As with most health issues, it’s generally more affordable to prevent a problem than it is to treat the problem. The same is true with your oral health. If plaque is not removed from your teeth, it can cause serious damages and infections. If your teeth are decayed you may need a dental filling or more expensive dental crown. If your teeth become infected, you may need a root canal.

The same is true for your gums. Advanced gum disease can require surgery and other invasive procedures to correct. Advanced gum disease can also cause you to lose your teeth, leaving you holding the bill for dentures, dental bridges, or dental implants.

What To Expect During a Dental Exam or Dental Cleaning

Both dental examines and dental cleanings are painless procedures at the office of Thomas J. Feder, DDS, PC, in Belleville, IL. We offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas) if you’re nervous about your treatment, and televisions in the ceiling for you to watch during your treatment.

During a dental exam, we will physically inspect your teeth. During this exam, we will screen you for tooth decay, gum disease, and oral cancer. We may also use digital x-rays to give us a clear picture of your oral health, and detect problems before they become an issue.

During dental cleanings, we use ultrasonic tools and kicks to remove plaque and deposits of tartar from your teeth. Your teeth won’t just be healthier, they’ll also look cleaner and shinier after a dental cleaning. Your dentist may recommend anti-cavity treatments such as fluoride or a dental sealant.
